AGC, Maryland Shall Issue and Others Sue to Overturn SB281

To Arlington Rifle and Pistol Club members,

You can click on the link at the end of this post to view the lawsuit where the Associated Gun Clubs, Maryland Shall Issue, et. al., are suing Governor Martin O’Malley, et. al. in Federal District Court to overturn the SB 281 bill which became Maryland law on October 1, 2013. This is the law which bans the purchase of the most commonly used rifles in the United States, limits the capacity of magazines purchased in Maryland to 10 rounds and requires citizens to obtain a Handgun Qualifying License (HQL) to be able to purchase a pistol.

I will send out any significant developments related to this case.

Thank you,

Rob

March 2014 Newsletter

Summary of February’s events:

February was another snowy months for Arlington, but we were able to have all of our events in spite of the weather.

February 4th 2nd Amendment Rally in Annapolis: There was a 2A rally in Annapolis on February 4,th The Maryland Legislature is hard at work to further restrict our gun rights and impose fees on guns and a 50% tax on ammunition. Six Arlington club members were able to attend the rally. It was really interesting to hear the speakers and meet people from around the state.

The February 8th 100-yard Steel Plate Rifle shoot was a lot of fun. We had 35 members and guests joined in to shoot steel targets. Many of our members turned out to test their new rifles. We had hotdogs, chips, cookies and soft drinks. Many thanks to everyone who came out early to help set up and stayed to help take down our club targets.

Our February 9th Frame Build was a terrific success thanks to our club member’s commitment to our Junior’s program; we built 48 target frames in less than two hours. All of the profits from the frame build are going to support the Arlington’s Juniors Program.

Our February 12th Club Meeting: We had a pretty good turnout considering the pending snowstorm. We had a quick meeting. The AGC February Trustee meeting had been cancelled due to bad weather. Ben talked about the clubs NRA Qualification program for rifle, pistol and shotgun that we will be having at all of our club shoots this year. It gives our members the opportunity to earn an NRA certification proficiency award for shooting rifle, pistol and shotgun. Pat presented the clubs treasures report and presented our 2014 budget. Steven, aka Shotgun talked about the clubs travel trap program. Steven is an avid shotgun shooter and has offered to lead excursions to surrounding ranges to shoot: skeet, sporting clays, five-stand, wobble trap and trap. Wade described the upcoming shooting events for March.

The February 22nd Club Pistol Shoot What a terrific turnout we had at our steel plate pistol shoot. We had 35 members and guests braving the snow to shoot steel targets, plastic toys and participate in Arlington’s NRA Winchester Pistol Qualification program. We had our first stake shoot of the year. We had teams of four shooters each competing to see who could cut their 2 x 4 stake in half the fastest. The toy targets took a beating, but our steel targets held up great. We had 17 shooters attempt the NRA pistol certification and 7 shooters successfully completed their qualification. We had chili, hotdogs, chips, and cookies. A big thanks to our husband and wife team: Pat and Rob for bringing a big crockpot of chili and managing the Arlington food concession. Thank you to everyone for helping set up and take down our targets. It’s a big job and we couldn’t put these shoots on without our volunteers.

MARCH EVENTS:

DIAPER FEST/BUST FEST Trap Shoot – Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.: Wade and his wife Ann are expecting a baby at any time. This Bust Fest is an opportunity to show our support to Wade’s new baby and future Arlington Junior. If you can, please bring a package of disposable diapers to the shoot for Wade’s new baby. Please get different sizes, because he is going to be a big boy.

Each shooter can break as many birds that you want, but we ask you to pay $10 to defray the cost of the birds we break or to bring a box of birds. Ammunition requirements for the trap range are: Target loads with a maximum velocity of 1200 Feet Per Second (FPS). The shot sizes allowed at the range are: 7.5, 8 or 9. Arlington will have shotgun ammunition available for $7 per box if you don’t have time to get to the store. Food and soft drinks will be provided.

Wednesday, March 12th, Club Meeting from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall. We will be discussing the upcoming club events, club budget, meeting new members, etc. There will be a 50/50 raffle and door prize. We will also have a show and tell period, so please bring in any new firearm or interesting item to share. The Arlington Swap meet is available at the back of the room if you have anything you want to sell, trade or give away. There will also be a question and answer time.

March 16thth, Fundraiser Frame Build benefitting our Juniors team from 9:00 – 12:00 in the lower Barnes Range House. No tools or experience is required. We work on an assembly line where each person performs one or two simple tasks. We normally finish building frames in less than two hours. Our Juniors rely on our fundraisers, so please come out and give us a hand. It is a lot of fun and you leave knowing you made a difference for our Juniors team.

Saturday, March 22nd Steel Plate Rifle Shoot from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. we have a steel plate rifle shoot at the Barnes Multi purpose Range. We will need volunteers to help set up and break down our targets. Please arrive at 8:00 a.m. if you can help set up.

We will also be having our NRA Winchester Rifle Qualification program for anyone who wishes to earn his or her NRA proficiency certification patch.

Tuesday, March 4th – Maryland House of Delegates will be having its Gun Bill Day hearings in Annapolis. Please check out the legislative session of the AGC website for the latest developments: http://www.associatedgunclubs.org. There is an automated email tool that allows you to email every legislator in the Maryland General Assembly with the click of a button. If you cannot make it to Annapolis to testify, please use the automated email tool to let our legislators know what you think about the different bills listed on the website. It is appropriate to send a simple email stating for or opposed to any of the bills listed. It only takes a few minutes to send an email to every member of the Maryland General Assembly.

Coming in April: Arlington and Greenbelt will be cosponsoring a 3-gun shoot Challenge shoot on April 6th and April 19th. Make for sure you stock up on 10 rounds of shotgun slugs and 5 rounds of buckshot for the shotgun portion. Each round you will also need 32 rounds of rifle ammo and 18 rounds of pistol ammo.

To defray the cost of targets, we are asking club members to pay $5 and non-club members to pay $10 per round. You will have a lot of fun doing this shoot. We have done two of these shoots with Greenbelt last year and we had a great time.

Have a great March!

Rob
